in iaM weeK s letters 1 reaa about the additional duties that Sheriff Woodward takes upon himself, such as; mechanic, seamstress, custodian and dealing with the placement of radios in the patrol vehicles. When working with the Sheriffs Office in the early 80’s, I too helped with a number of the vehicles when it came to putting equipment in the vehicles or making repairs, and I can also remember a number of other people who have helped through the years to support this cause, but I’ve never heard their names mentioned at all. Twelve years ago the county recieved a new dispatch systerm and the jail was renovated which Sheriff Woodward frequently recieves all the credit for. Prior to Sheriff Woodward’s term there were many people behind the scenes that made this possible such as the Board of Supervisors, volunteer fire and rescue departments and other volunteers. Sheriff Woodward was obviously in the right position, place, and time to recieve all the credit that many deserved to be a part of.

Let’s look at the record since the jail opened. We’ve had five escapes from the jail, the same person twice. How can we account for this happening time after time? We have the equipment and personnel in place, equipment that is modem and personnel that are dedicated to their profession, but l believe we lack the management skills from the Sheriff to address these re-occuring problems.

My last thought concerns the youth of our county and the increasing juvenile crime rate. I believe law enforcement plays a significant role in the education of our youth. I believe that it is very important that role models in our county participate in functions involving the youth, as 1 have
