Upgrades can cost from $850 to $17,500 depending on the equipment.
Starting this week the communications organizations are launching a campaign called “Don’t Get Stuck in the Middle.” Organizations are encouraged to call test numbers to determine if their system needs an upgrade to read new area codes.
In Virginia the test number is (540) 829-9910. If a call to that number does not go through, callers should contact the Area Code Hotline at 1-800-218-6436, to report the difficulty.
Additionally new toll-free numbers will be assigned the 888 area code instead of 800 starting March 1, 1996. Businesses or organizations using old switching equipment will not be able to reach these numbers either.
