On the list of GOP accomplishments: welfare reform, parole abolition, truth-in-sentencing and tougher DWI laws. Ms. Scheer has said she supports the parole reform and truthin-sentencing changes.
Some items still up for debate: spending cuts, tax cuts apd funding for prison construction.
Del. Katzen’s message is clear: further change rests with the election of enough Republican legislators to overcome an “obstructionist” Democratic majority.
Republicans need to gain four seats in the House of Delegates and three in the Senate to take control of the General Assembly. If they succeed, Virginia will be the first state in the South with a Republican-controlled legislature since Reconstruction.
It would also be hailed by national Republicans as confirmation of their revolution, providing bragging rights and momentum for 1996 GOP campaigns.
That all depends, though, on the outcome of races like the one in the 31st District. And that may depend, in the end, on the popularity of a man who lives in Richmond.
