This is in response to a couple of letters to the Editor in last week’s Rappahannock News. In the 12 years as Sheriff of Rappahannock County, I have never relieved anyone from their position without just cause and Mrs. Connie Huff-Harris was no different. Due to the fact that this is a personnel matter, I am not at liberty to discuss the particulars of her release publicly. The only thing that I did in this matter was that she was not relieved of her duties sooner, but out of respect to her father, brother and uncle who I have high regards for, I overlooked some of her causes for termination.
In regard to my policy on use of the police vehicles assigned to a Deputy Sheriff, it is stricter than my counterparts of adjoining counties which allow for the use of the vehicle off duty for any activities within the county which is called visibility. My policy is that it is not to be used off duty unless it is law enforcement oriented, but if someone runs down to the local store for a loaf of bread, etc., it is allowable. On duty any deputy may stop by any place of business and purchase items if so needed. In fact it is encouraged.
I do not know where Mr. Harris is receiving his information on problems in my office, but he should find another source that will state the truth and p6l his/her opinions. The DARE program is administrated by myself, keeping up with funding, scheduling days for the DARE officer to teach and put on programs. As with any other programs/meetings, prior commitments may not allow for me personally to attend all functions.
