For a Change

As Election Day draws near 1 would like to take this opportunity to express a few of my thoughts. When 1 addressed my first crowd at the Court House on the 4th of July to explain my goals and objectives, I felt proud to be part of the electoral process.
Two things stand out in my mind recollecting that event. The first being the joy and celebration that all the adults and children were exhibiting that day. Secondly, a statement that the Sheriff made to the crowd. He stated, “I know all there is to know about the Sheriff’s Office and all there is to know about budgeting.!’ I thought to myself, “Do we ever reach a point where we know all there is to know about any subject?” I don’t think so.
I’ve had the opportunity to review copies of the Sheriff s Office budget for the last several years and this year, and what concerns me are the many items within the budget that could be heavily scrutinized to trim costs. There are many grants that are available to law enforcement agencies that provide money^to train employees, purchase equipment, combat drug abuse at no cost to the taxpayers of this county. I have worked with sheriffs that utilize this avenue to remove the additional burden from the taxpayers.
I believe the real savings lie in budget cuts and obtaining funds through grants. Why should Rappahannock County be left out when other counties across the state are taking advantage of these offers? My goal will be to provide a cost effective and efficient Sheriffs Office that will be trained and held accountable for their actions.
