Sue Scheer is not bound to outside interests or extremist ideologies Her opponent has received 43 percent of his funding (up to Oct. 15th) from PACs, most of which are outside the 31st District. Sue Scheer’s funding is local. She will not owe anything to outside interests when she gets to Richmond. She will be able to vote for the needs of the 31 st District.
Sue Scheer has been able to reach out to voters of both political parties inside the 31st District. Her opponent has alienated a large sector of his own party. Many that worked in his 1993 campaign and are now working for Sue Scheer.
It has been mentioned in letters in the Rappahannock News that Sue Scheer should not be elected because the Democrats have had control of die General Assembly for 122 years, and the Republicans should have a turn. This argument is absurd. Sue Scheer should be elected because she is the best choice.
While there is not enough spa£e here for a history of the Virginia Democratic party, I should like to point out something people seem to forget. The Democrats have done a good job running the state in the last few years. Republicans talk about “tax-and-spend liberals”. When was the last tax hike in Virginia? (Hint: it was before Chuck Robb was elected Governor in 1981). Virginia has a lower tax rate than 43 of the 50 states Is this “tax-and-spend”? Under Governor Wilder, Virginia was rated the best run state for two years in a row by a money investment magazine. (Now we have slipped to number two). The Republicans are hard put to come up with a reason for changing how our state is run. Perhaps that is why much Republican criticism of Virginia Democrats seems based on New Jersey problems.
And this again brings us back to the candidacy of Sue Scheer. She is a Virginian; she is a 30 year resident of Fauquier county who has roots in the 31st District, with commitments to improving where she lives; and Sue Scheer has a history of dedicated service to her community. She has reasonable approaches to Virginian problems, not some ideological attachment to issues outside of where we live. She will represent the needs and visions of a majority of the citizens of the 31st District, not the wants and fears of an extremist few. Sue Scheer should be elected to the General Assembly.
