Virginia’s State Corporation Commission has joined with local phone companies, long distance companies and the FCC in a program to combat a problem that may keep people from being able to call Rappahannock County and other areas in the new 540 area code after Jan. 27, 1996.
Businesses with private branch exchanges (PBX) or similar switching equipment may not be able to call into the 540 area code if their equipment is not upgraded.
Many new area codes using numbers 2 through 9 in the middle digit are being activated, not just in Virginia but throughout the country. Old switching equipment cannot reach these numbers. The SCC believes many businesses with this equipment have not yet upgraded.
