When you read this, we will be on the last days of my campaign for the House of Delegates from the 31st District. And the question I get most of .the time these days is, “I bet you’ll be glad when this (campaign) is all over.”
Well, yes and no. Living on a steady diet of filling station hot dogs isrt’t a prescription for good health, bjit I have enjoyed almost every nfinute of the time I have spent traveling about the district and meeting all thfi residents. ’• I first saw this area when I was a teenager. My parents wanted to take a trip before I went to college, so we drove through the valley of Virginia •and through Rappahannock and Fauquier, and I thought I had discovered a wonderland. I vowed — I was still in the dreaming age — that someday I would live here!
Thirty years ago, my husband, Julian, and I moved to our farm near Catlett and I get the same sense of Wonderment today as I got as a teenager. No place can match the beauty of this area and no place can match the warmth of its inhabitants.
I think I have had a special feeling for this place because of where I came from: a dying community in the Northeast, dying industry and dying spirit. It was so sad. I promised that I would do everything I could to make certain that never happened here.
It may seem awfully idealistic, but I believed then — as I do now — that individuals can make a difference. I threw myself into the job of building on the way of life we have here, and I have not slowed down in JCLyears, nor do I intend to.
In my case it was going from PTO’s to the Fauquier County Planning Commission with time for our Rescue Squad, Cancer Society, Mental Health Association, citizens’ organizations and just about any other •group that needed a volunteer. I drew on my professional experience working at a college, a university, an educational association, a congressional office and at AID in the U.S. Department of State. . . When I and others became upset with what was happening in •Richmond, particularly in education, jobs and the environment, my friends urged me to take on one more task.
