The supervisors got an earful Monday afternoon from Flint Hill area residents objecting to the VDOT proposal for improvements to Route 630.
All said the road does need improvements since it regularly is flooded out, but all also agreed the VDOT proposal to rebuild the road with a new intersection and a 25-foot paved surface was “overkill.”
Bemie Fisken said, “It’s a squirrel project. VDOT is bringing in a bear gun.” He added that the proposed road improvement would create a speedway and said Rappahannock County “is the pearl of the Piedmont.” 1 He suggested instead of spending $800,000 on improving the joad VDOT should spend about $100,000 and leave the rest to make patches. “You can do a lot of road patching for $800,000,” he said.
Phil Irwin agreed saying, “Something ought to be done. Their proposal is way beyond anything necessary.”
Phyllis Magrab said, “Rural life is dying because of things like this.”
