Mysterious Alphabet?
No one seems to know why U.S. 211 and Route 231 are lined with signs in day-glow colors with letters of the alphabet on them.
Coming from Warrenton through Sperryville and heading for Madison, the signs are apparently in alphabetical order, but they are spaced very irregularly and there also does not seem to be a pattern to the background colors of poster board used.
The “T” between the “S” and the “U” on Route 231 was mowed down Monday.
A check with VDOT, County Administrator John McCarthy and the Extension Service Tuesday produced no answers. Mr. McCarthy said he had also checked with the Sheriff’s Office and there were no answers there.
"If the goal was to make the county’s bureaucracy scratch its collective head, it has been successful,v he added.
