Walking is such an easy exercise — nearly everyone can do it, and it can be done almost anywhere. j

More and more walkers can be seen out in all kinds of weather, swinging their arms and taking long strides in order to get the full benefit of this exercise which is great both for firming up muscles and for the cardiovascular system. It’s also a good ' way to get a tan.

Kerri Wagner of Washington started out with short walks in April, 1995, and her walks grew progressively longer. “Now I am a walking addict,” she said. She walks in extreme heat and cold, through snow, rain, and fog. In the big snow last January, she and her husband were snowed in at Sycamore Hill House for six days. “As soon as it was plowed, I was out there,” she said, wearing hiking boots instead of sneakers, and several layers of clothing.

Mrs. Wagner says that her main impetus for starting walking was as a recovery program from cancer surgery. Also, she admitted, she had seen a spring shape-up program on the Oprah Winfrey show and that got her going.

She has now worked up to walking three miles daily, which includes her 1.6 mile round trip steep (a 500 ft. rise from the bottom to the top), gravel driveway. Though she has arthritis in one knee, it has never been bothered by the walking. She said that exercise is important to build bone mass and protect the heart.

Mrs. Wagner wears out a pair of Reebok classic nylon running shoes every three months, but that is her main expense for the sport. She said, and probably most walkers agree, that good shoes are the most important piece of walking gear. She also swears by Thorlo socks, which cost $12 a pair but are padded on the ball
