away, with no telephones ringing or ; any other cares to worry about for that time you’re out on the road. “It makes * my temperament better; it is my t Valium,” said Mrs. Wagner. She and her husband have a bed and breakfast,,. ■ and she savors her one hour a day, . completely away from everyone. It is* also a time to observe nature, seeing; wildflowers, fox, deer, birds, and; other wildlife, even ruffed grouse.

When I first started walking, I ( bought a Nike “Just Do It” shirt tohang on the wall so I would see it

when I first awoke in the morning.. | Seeing that shirt would get me up and out for my walk. But now, that daily walk is something I want to do and if ; | f miss it for some reason (it has to be * I a huge reason, like torrential rains) * i I’ll try to walk double the next day to*' make up for it. \

On many roads in Rappahannock, t watching out for traffic while walking; , is not a problem. I used to wear a* Walkman and listened to tapes while doing my walk out Harris Hollow Road, but did away with that after coming within three inches of a large red vehicle, which swept by me so fast around a curve that I swore to always pay better attention. One place where people can walk and avoid all . traffic is around the track at RCHS, which is open to the public. Four | times around is one mile.

Patti Mullan of Sperryville is* j another walker who began her regi- ' men following surgery, though she! had back surgery. She believes that . walking is the best non-abrasive exercise she has ever done, and that it has really strenghtened the muscles in her back. Like Mrs. Wagner, Mrs. Mullan walks her driveway., which is also steep and about two miles round trip.

She walks in all kinds qf weather also, and mostly wears hiking boots instead of regular walking shoes. She has even done it by flashlight when - the days were too short to fit it in during daylight.

The walking has really gotten her back in shape to the point where she can ride horses again. She enjoys the quiet time spent on a walk and relish-' es watching the landscape, especially since taking a drawing class with Lois Manookian. “You can look at nature, assimilate all the things you pass by,” she said.

There is an empowerment about .being in shape and once you get it you don’t want to give it up, said Mrs. Mullan.
