On Thursday, Fauquier Republicans take the first step in the complex process of selecting their nominee for the 31st District House of Delegates seat.
The Fauquier Republican canvass pits incumbent Jay Katzen against challenger Kay Hayes, a civic activist with no prior political experience. Whoever draws more supporters to the event should receive the GOP nomination at the May 29 convention.
Republican regulars are expecting a huge turnout at the Thursday event, which one party loyalist predicted will be “like a Chinese fire drill.”
On many issues, the two share similar views.
Both support the new law requiring parental notification when minors seek abortions. Both oppose limits on law-abiding citizens’ gun purchases.
Hayes said she had not developed positions on some issues, and would “get into the issues if I get the nomination.”
Katzen stands on his record as a conservative member of the House and as a strong advocate for the policies of Gov. George Allen.
“My record is the one I stand on with pride of major achievements for Virginia as part of the Allen team in education, in welfare, in the economy, in the environment — landmark reforms,” Katzen said.
Hayes said she is running against Katzen primarily because he put his own political ambitions before the needs of the district when he entered the race for lieutenant governor.
Katzen withdrew from that race in April.
