Jeb Hays one of the students commented that “The technical knowledge of this operation was not that hard. I think the fact that Mr. Tice had industry Contacts, coupled with our technical knowledge provided a rare opportunity for this job. 1 made contacts that will help me in the future.”
J.W. Marshall, a first year electronics student offered this perspective. “I have never been in a corporate situation before in my life, but I got a crash course on this job. A great sense of responsibility was needed for this job.”
Adam Manning another first year student said. “I decided a year ago that I liked what the Electronics program at Piedmont had to offer. In my mind it was one of the best decisions that I have ever made.
“A recent report by the U.S. Department of Education revealed that U.S. students are falling behind in such critical areas as math and the physical sciences. Other reports reveal that the way such precursors to technical skills are taught in the United States is not as effective as the way they’re taught in other countries.
Within a year or two, Virginia will need thousands of workers with strong technical skills, lots of experience working with computers and solid science, engineering and technical training.” Wayne Rash — senior technology editor of Communication Week.
With all of this in mind, it is vitally important that education and industry build cooperative programs to provide students with the skills they will need in tomorrow’s world. This pilot project with RMS and Lucent is a step in the right direction.
