consulting fees regarding the roof repair. The remaining $108,500 was cut from the bottom line, which means it’s out of the hands of the supervisors to decide where the cuts will be made.
“One thing I’m happy to say,” said Piedmont District Supervisor Charles K. “Pete” Estes, “is the school board is elected and they’ll have to face up to this just like we will — but we didn’t prepare it.”
Jackson District Supervisor Ron Frazier and Mr. Estes wanted a $200,000 cut. Board chairman Hubert S. Gilkey proposed a $190,000 cut as a compromise, after StonewallHawthorne District Supervisor Robert Anderson had proposed $166,500. Hampton District Supervisor Mike Massie then proposed $175,000 cut and it was put to a vote. Mr. Frazier and Mr. Estes voted no, Mr. Massie passed and Mr. Gilkey and Mr. Anderson voted yes. Mr. Massie then voted yes and the vote carried.
It is an increase of $511,000, the largest ever increase in the school budget either percentage wise or in dollars said County Administrator John McCarthy.
