In recognition of Volunteer Appreciation Month, the American Cancer Society would like to acknowledge the many volunteers that work on behalf of their communities.
The local office of the American Cancer Society is located at 246 East Davis Street in Culpeper and serves Culpeper, Fauquier, Madison, Orange and Rappahannock Counties. Each County has its own Board of Directors which determines the patient service programs made available in their area as well as any fundraising opportunities. These Board Members work year round to provide for cancer patients and their families, offering transportation to treatment centers, aid with medical equipment if needed, nutritional support, wigs, etc.
Additionally, these volunteers offer educational opportunities throughout the community to individuals, schools, clubs, civic groups, and businesses. The American Cancer Society is very fortunate to have the following Board of Directors currently serving Rappahannock County: President, Paige Coombs; vice president, Col. John Hartline; secretary, Mary Louise Bane; treasurer, Henry B. Wood, III; relay recruitment, Ester Settle; relay recruitment, Dorothy Butler; Mrs. Helen Brown, Mrs. Charlotte Freeman, Rev. J.W. Hobson, III, Mrs. Betty Klise, Mrs. Carol Miller, Mrs. Charlotte Nichols, Mrs. Susan Parrish, Mrs. Judy Tole, Mrs. Margy White and Mrs. Cheri Woodard.
Some of our wonderful volunteers take on extra responsibilities, such as Paige Coombs, who in addition to serving as President of the Rappahannock Unit of the American Cancer Society was also chairperson of the very successful fundraising luncheon held at Chesley in the fall of 1996.
Ester Settle (relay recruitment cochair) is also called upon to serve as Coordinator of the Reach to Recovery Program which offers invaluable one on one support to breast cancer, patients. Mary Louise Bane (secretary) is working on distributing newsletters sharing health information with the community.
A Love and Laughter support group aided by Board Members Betty Klise and Ester Settle meets twice a month providing a forum for cancer patients to get together and discuss important issues. Without these wonderful volunteers the American Cancer Society would be hard pressed to provide for the many cancer patients in need — so to all who support our efforts by supplying their talent, their time, and their dollars — THANK YOU!
