won 418, the Conservatives won 165, and the Liberal Democrat Party won 46; the balance went to regional parties in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Island, and I Independent. Labour campaign sources tell me that they were genuinely surprised by the magnitude of their party’s victory, and expression of delighted amazement came from many candidates who upset entrenched incumbents in supposedly “safe” Tory seats.
