• The Tories lost every single parliamentary seat that they had held 1 in Scotland and Wales. Their members in the British House of Commons * now represent only constituencies in England.
• Due to the greater diversity in the Labour Party and the efforts of some constituency party branches to select more women nominees, the ' victory of so many Labour candidates will greatly increase the number of women in Parliament — almost doubling their total to 116. Of these, 101 *' are Labour, and the youngest is just 24 years old.
• Every single vote does count One Tory minister lost his seat by a margin of two votes to a challenger from the liberal Democratic Party, in a race where more than 50,000 votes were cat. Indeed, the third-party Liberal Democrats had something very good going for them in 1997: . despite a one percent decrease to 17 percent in their overall percentage of the national vote, they more than doubled the number of seats which they had won at the 1992 election. In many constituencies where the Labour f Party candidate had run second to the Tory in 1992, Liberal Democratic l” party supporters this year cast “tactical votes’* for the Labour Party candidate to unseat the Tory incumbent Ideologically, this shift made sense.
