Lois Manookian’s “Close to Home” exhibition of 20 water-color and chalk pictures at the Middle Street Gallery for the month of May is one of the most colorful and cheerful groups that has been shown there. bulk of the pictures are poetically lyrical paintings of county landscapes in all seasons. A group of four small pictures were painted in the Caribbean and show the distinctive light and character of the islands. Another five feature wooden structures and an old horse trailer as well as a still life of water-worn stones. These focus on the texture of unpainted wood, dilapidated farm buildings and stones. With their delicate shadings of natural surfaces and meticulously drawn hard edges, they contrast especially with the landscapes.
What we learn from surveying the show is that Lois’ technique is not limited, but one she can adapt to her surroundings. She has developed a remarkable ability to attack with aplomb any problem arising from what she wants to paint. Weekend
The eleventh annual Spring Wildflower Weekend will be presented in Shenandoah National Park on May 17 and 18.
A wide variety of programs featuring spring wildflowers will be offered throughout the weekend.
Programs and tours will be provided by National Park Rangers, as well as volunteers from local naturalist societies.
