The Rappahannock County High School Bible Club is one of many local groups who is raising funds for the American Cancer Society’s upcoming Relay for Life.
This is the second year of participation in this annual event for the Bible Club. They raised $500 last year for the Relay for Life and this year their goal is $1000.
“I think Amy Joback got us started and introduced it (the Relay) to us last year, “ said Anna Metcalfe, club president. Amy's bother Joey is now a club member and participant for this year's Relay. “About five or six of us were involved. We thought it was great and started earlier this year to get people involved. A lot more are participating this year than last and that’s encouraging. It’s been a real help to us to have the Bible Club during our resources period because more people can attend that are also in other things, like sports and other clubs.”
“We’re a lot bigger this year,” said club member Kate May, “and that should help with donations.”
“I don’t want to speak for everybody,” Anna said, “but many of us are pro-life and the title. Relay for Life, advocates the value of human life."
They have just gotten into the whirl of fundraising activities, but started recruiting club members back in the first part of the year. Last weekend they participated in the Craft, Yard and Bake Sale held to benefit the Relay and also held a car wash, working with Esther Settle’s group during the event. Mrs. Settle is a driving force behind local efforts to raise funds for the ACS, chairs the local survivor support group and is herself a cancer survivor.
