Editor’s Note: The Rappahannock News, as Mr. Reinbolt stated, covered the school board meeting of March and reported on increases in the coming budget. We also ran a top of the front page article on the school budget hearing, about the possible raise in real estate taxes, under the headline ‘Residents Anxious Over Possible Tax Hike’ on April 30, the week prior to the Board of Supervisors meeting. This article quoted Mr. Reinbolt and many others. We were severly criticized for the negative tone of the article. In addition this newspaper, as early as Jan. 1 of this year, warned of increased real estate taxes should the school budget be passed. Since that time the school budget was reported on as were the activities of the Board of Supervisors, and many letters to the editor have been printed discussing this issue as well. Finally, if Mr. Reinbolt was at the Board’s May 5 meeting he did not speak out. In fact, out of the eight inattendance, three of whom represented the school system, only one spoke against the proposed school budget. Our point in the headline was that even though they did cut the budget, it was too little to make a real difference, as indicated by the second half of that headline ‘Taxes Will Still Go Up’.
