Many statewide EMS programs receive funding from ‘Two for Life,” which is the two dollars added to auto registration fees. To further enhance local EMS, 25 percent of the money collected from “Two for Life” is returned directly to the locality in which the vehicle is registered (Rappahannock County EMS receives this funding).
Here are some tips on how to help the EMS team:
1) Know your emergency number and post it on or near every telephone. In Rappahannock County, call 911. Teach children how to place an emergency call. Write down a set of simple directions to your home and keep them by the phones. In a panic, the directions will save valuable time.
2) Call EMS only when you believe the situation is life-threatening or serious. If you are not sure, don’t guess — call EMS.
3) When placing the emergency call, state the type of emergency and give clear directions. Don’t hang up until instructed. The dispatcher may give life-saving instructions.
4) Until help arrives,. stay calm and assure the patient that help is on the way. Don’t move the patient unless they are in immediate danger. Keep the patient warm and as comfortable as possible.
5) Make it easy for EMS to find you. Send someone to meet the ambulance. Turn on the four-way flashers of a car in the driveway or on the street irt front of the house.
6) Support the volunteer EMS with your time, talents and donations.
