A small water color and chalk picture, “Sunset,” made me catch my breath with its red-orange clouds, accompanied by ones of yellow, lavender and blue. There are white farm buildings with green roofs, blond and brown fields and blue-black mountain. The composition of this picture is good and its contents interesting — an altogether moving scene.

The study, “After Rain,” used on the card announcing the show, is another strong picture. One can compare it with “Old Road and Fence Line,” a large and more careful delineation of the same scene. In the larger picture, all the colors are keyed up a bit and everything is painted more distinctly than in the study. A big puddle of water in the road reflects the big trunks and tree branches behind it. The
