The trees march purposefully from the lower right, diagonally across the picture to and beyond its center, while at the point where the trees stop, one’s eye is led from the bottom of the picture at the middle of the pool, to a hump in the road, another part of the puddle, and up a tree trunk past distant blue mountains and into a mass of pinkish-lavender tree foliage. The bases of the trees are accented by a line of orange undergrowth, creating a colorful diversion from pale green and buff field grasses. This is a spectacular picture.
Creating an entirely different mood is a small water color and chalk scene entitled “Winter Fields.” This calm and chilling landscape shows a patch of dried tan com, tan sedge and snow patches on a field of dead grass. There are fences, two white silos and gray and yellow clouds with touches of blue. The lines in this picture are sinuous.
