in the care of Hana (Juliette Binoche), a French-Canadian nurse. With Hana’s help and his only possession (a book that contains some letters, maps and photographs) he begins to recover his memory. The “English” patient is actually Count Laszlo de Almasy, a Hungarian explorer who had been mapping the African desert with his companions from the Royal Geographic Society, British aristocrats Geoffrey Clifton (Colin Frith) and his brilliant wife, Katherine (Kristin Scott Thomas), with whom Almasy has had a passionate affair. Soon Almasy and Hana are joined at the monastery by Caravaggio, a mysterious Canadian thief who has been spying for the English and recognizes Almasy. Gradually the past unfolds in a criss-cross of romance and intrigue. Rated R, 162 minutes.
