De’Danann Glassworks at Oldway Art Center in Sperryville will be hosting classes on making glass beads on May 22,-23, 24, 25 and 26.
Don McKinney, who has worked with glass for 20 years, will be teaching the lampwork method (using an oxygen propane torch) to make the glass beads.
“Don is a really well-known and well-recognized lampworker,” said Patti Brennanf, proprietor of De'Danann Glassworks. She added that glass beads are really big in the jewelry market now.
Glass beadmaking is an old, old skill that people have done for hundreds of years, said Ms. Brennan. She is really excited to have someone of Mr. McKinney’s caliber to teach classes in her studio. His trademark glass bead is of a fish which can be worn on a chain. He also makes marbles on a torch, said Ms. Brennan.
The classes will be limited to four students each. Each class will run for one day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. All materials and tools are included in the $ 150 cost for the class.
