approach to our landscape. In the five pictures focusing on the textures of wood and stone, one of her aims seems to be to paint light as if her subjects were viewed with the sun shining on them. .
In writing about the exhibitions at the Middle Street Gallery, I try to understate rather than overstate my enthusiasms, especially when I’m commenting on works of art I can. imagine people less interested in art than I am might feel. In the case of Lois Manookian’s paintings, I’m finding it hard not to explode with joy because I’m sure my response to her wonderful use of color and her achievements as a technician with an especially difficult medium — water color — will be shared by all who see her show. Anyone looking at Lois’ “Close to Home” views of the country will need no further enlightenment about where we live and why. On the other hand, one can only fully appreciate the deceptively “realistic” quality of her work by comparing it to others trying to do the same thing.
