In the North African desert in World War II, an unidentified survivor of a plane crash (Ralph Fiennes) has been found by Bedouins. Badly burned, he has no memory of his past. Believing him to be English, the Bedouins turn him over to the Allies, and he is taken by medical convoy to Italy. His condition considered hopeless, he is left to die in an abandoned Tuscan monastery.
