“There is a future for this region, where it can look very much like it does today,” said Miller. “And one of the key components is a vibrant agricultural economy. The Piedmont is an area that is poised — perhaps for the first time in two or three decades — to take off as a viable, even profitable economy.”
Miller believes that demand for top-quality fruits, vegetables and chemical-free beef coming from the Washington, D.C. and Richmond metropolitan areas is great enough “to absorb nearly everything we can produce here.”
‘Traditionally, what we have done is to try to preserve agricultural lands and retain the capacity for production,” said Miller. “What we are looking into now is how we can be helpful in promoting the products from the region.”
PEC staff has identified two areas where it can assist the regional agriculture business. The PEC can help create an identity for agricultural produce — for example as “Piedmont Pure Products” — and can help find a way to distribute produce in an efficient manner to the markets that now exist.
