and began lessons at the Victoria Banjo Club. The following year he was hired to sing hillbilly on Murray Steamboat in Avoca and that, as they say, was that — he was hooked. In 1945 he formed The Hayseeds, the equivalent of the Sons of the Pioneers in the U.S.
The Hayseeds broke up in 1958, but reformed over the years for special events. Their recordings have recently been made available again on Cattle Records. ' Tex, however, has never stopped performing and was recently honored with the Golden Oldies Heritage Award for 70 years in show business at the Rooty Hill RSL Club in Tamworth, Australia which benefited the Arthritis Foundation, one of rhany causes for which he works.
Since 1944, he has promoted young Australian entertainers and helped many to achieve their goals of performing. He is still doing this at age 82. He has also performed with some of the best, such as Slim Dusty, perhaps the most well known Australian country music star.
He travels around Australia and helps promote young performers with promise. “I’ve got a place to stay anywhere in Australia,” he said, speaking of the large extended family he has helped and encouraged over the years.
He also has a pretty large extended American family, like Dick and Ginny, and that one is still growing. “It’s one of the best things that ever happened to me,” he said of his acquaintance with Ginny and Dick, “and I’ve met more and more Americans since.”
He met the Pierson’s through a friend when Dick made inquiries about country recordings from Australia. Dick had a show at Big ‘K’ radio in Fauquier and now has a 20,000 album record collection of original recordings dating back to country’s roots.
