Drowning
accident
in Flint Hill

A Flint Hill man drowned Friday, April 17, in what has been determined by the authorities to be a tragic accident.
Robbie Pullen, 21, of Flint Hill apparently went for a swim in a pond off Bear Wallow Road perhaps not realizing the depth of the pond he had the misfortune to choose, said Rappahannock Sheriff Gary Settle of the incident.
Pullen had left his clothes, watch and identification on the dam next to the pond. Those things were seen by a weekend resident of the n^ea, who thought it strange and thought maybe someone was in the area, and notified the sheriff’s department.
They arrived at the scene about 5:40 p.m. and kicked in the protocols said Settle. They found the identification, checked the area to see if they could locate Pullen, called for canine units to be brought in to comply with search and rescue protocol and made contact with Pullen’s father, Robert-' Pullen also of Flint Hill.
He told them his son could not swim. They then called in divers from the Front Royal fire department, said Settle. Front Royal has two qualified divers and they were closer than any others.
The divers arrived at 8:20 p.m. and were in the water at 8:30 p.m. Five minutes later they found Pullen’s body just off shore, Settle said.
The pond, although not large, being about 50 yards by 50 yards, is very deep, almost 17 feet. Settle said they believe after Pullen went in he stepped off into a deeper area and could not get out. The medical examiner was called in. There were no signs of foul play and the incident has been ruled to be an accidental death.
