A female robin has built her mud and grass nest just outside my study window. It’s in a tangle of honeysuckle entwined around a spindley elm. I can’t see the nest from inside but I know when the robin visits because a branch supporting the nest is only a few feet from my window. The branch bounces when the birds approach the nest.
The darker, more strongly colored male often sits on the fence that separates this property from my neighbor. The female is a much paler shade of gray on her head and the brick-red of her breast, though beautiful, is not as rich as the male. They are a companiable pair; he often accompanies her to the nest but it is she who is incubating the blue eggs.
When the nest was being built, he often sat nei;r the nest while she worked. On several occasions, he brought nesting material that he placed nearby for her to use. It’s a bulky, well-built nest and is protected from the rain by being very close to the chimnfey which leans out somewhat. Smart bird.
