with his paternal grandmother Roberta Russell in Sperryville. His interest in music m.date from then. Roberta Russell played the organ for the Hopewell Baptist Church for 37 years.

His father, Sperryville’s .James Russell, does not claim any credit for his son’s talent, but he says his mother, Russell’s grandmother, probably was an influence.

Russell started playing Flamenco guitar at an early age and gave his first public performance when he was 11years-old. He later toured the country and recorded for Columbia Records as a jazz musician. In 1987 he moved to Berlin, Germany. There he linked up with other musicians interested in various musical styles that make up the black musical heritage.
