People are forced to move out into the county where they must buy a larger parcel or move out of county altogether.
“Wastewater is a very important issue. One of the things I have been pushing for a long time is (finding out) what our system actually costs us. We are looking at possible solutions, but we are not focusing on what the cost will be. Years ago, when I was on the council before, we didn’t have a Meals and Lodging Tax and the water system had to stand on its own. Now, we are subsidizing it, and I think that’s not fiscally responsible. If the tourist trade takes a turn for the worse, then we may not have a subsidy for the water system.
“The consensus of the town is against boundary expansion. As the center of town gets slowly gobbled up by commercial uses, it will grow. The county has no restrictions, and, on my end of town, there are lots of water taps, ripe for subdivision. The question is do we get to have any control over it at all. I’m not talking about the color of houses, but whether everything fits together as a community We should watch potential development around town. We need long-range contingency plans, like what Mr. Herd’s meetings are about.
“The town has a responsibility as county seat and a major intersection of county roads. We need to keep that in mind. It touches on the parking issue. Two committees found there was no problem, but I think it needs to be looked at again, so I founded this third (parking survey) committee.”
