occurs only during the breeding season. The bird nests in Canada and as far north as trees grow. In Texas and Mexico the bird occurs only during the winter. No doubt many of those birds are migrants from Virginia. Our winter birds are from farther north.
Here in Virginia we are blessed with robins all through the year. They frequently appear on the lawn in January or February to search for earthworms. This is not a sign of spring but of the temporary warming of the soil to 37 degrees.
With any species so widely distributed, there is a variation in size and color. Robins of the far north tend to be larger and paler than those nearer the tropics where they are not only smaller but darker. Evolution through adjustment to climate has fitted robins for survival.
