income (and residences) will be curtailed or limited, if not from the actual lack of facilities, then from the odor. For many years now, the community has been resistant to sewer treatment for fear of the repercussions. This fear is not without merit. We (the Wastewater Committee) have confirmed that the cost and the regulatory morass that results from the standard sewer treatment plant is beyond our scope and not something that we want in terms of preserving our small, rural and historic town.
“There are other approaches to the problem that are not as invasive or expensive. Additional drain field space would be one, and package treatment plants are another. The study that is now underway will tell us which of these low-tech solutions would be suitable for our situation. In addition, if we have the leadership to pay for the unintrusive solutions ourselves, we can avoid the regulatory minefield that goes with the normal state and federal financing.
“The town is currently blessed with a positive cash flow, primarily as a result of the success of The Inn. That positive cash flow cannot last forever. The challenge, then, is to make wise use of the resources that we currently enjoy. We should be investing our cash resources in such a way as to insure that, in the future, other tourist-oriented businesses can contribute to the town coffers, and that major expenses are not going to extract a ‘pound of flesh.’ If we fail to do this, the town may be in the unfortunate position of having to levy a town tax.”
