The county school board met with about a dozen teachers and county residents on Tuesday; April 13, at the elementary school. Bob Landes, representing Wise and Associates, the architectural engineering consultant firm recently hired by the board to oversee the schools’ restroom renovation and roofing projects, presented a briefing of the company’s preliminary findings and recommendations for the work to be done.
Cost estimates range from about $216,000 to more than $219,000, depending on the final scope of work. County school superintendent Dr. David Gangel indicated that the next step would be to put together final project specifications and issue requests for bids from construction companies. Gangel also noted that the board "has no budget, yet. We are proceeding on faith that the money will be there.”
Wise and Associates will monitor the construction and ensure that the work is executed according to plan. The company will also review all bills as they come in. Landes strongly suggested that incentive or penalty clauses be incorporated into the contract to ensure that the work gets done in time for school to open next fall.
Reading model
Teacher Lilo Wolfe presented recommendations for a new reading program that would form reading classes across the sixth and seventh grade levels. “Each of the eight classes available would potentially contain both sixth and seventh grade students” to better meet students’ needs, she said, “We are committed to avoiding tracking or labeling students. Membership in each reading class will be determined solely on student performance.”
Wolfe explained that students will be regularly reevaluated in terms of their ability to handle the work assignments and, as their proficiency improves, they will be given the opportunity to move to another group. Some of the classes will be stressing basicreading skills while others will emphasize literature appreciation. Each student will progress at his or her own rate.
