The political boundary between the counties of Rappahannock and Culpeper is firmly drawn. However, local plants and animals cross this line in the Blue Ridge foothills freely.
Not only do species from the two counties mix, the foothills area is a zone where mountain species meet those from the Piedmont. The result is what scientists call biodiversity, which simply means an unusually high number of different kinds of animals and plants.
