The general elections will not happen until November, but the deadline to qualify as a candidate is June 8, barely more than a month away.
This year, election to the following offices will be contested:
Sheriff, Clerk of the Circuit Court, Commissioner of Revenue, Treasurer, Commonwealth’s Attorney, Board of Supervisors (all districts) and School Board (all districts).
Anyone who wishes to qualify as a candidate must return a completed packet to the County Registrar of Voters Office.
Packets can be obtained by calling (800) 552-9745.
Bryant Lee, who is running for Supervisor in the Hampton District, was the only qualified candidate, as of April 27.
The packet includes a qualification form, economic interests report and declaration of candidacy form.
A prospective candidate also needs.to include a signed petition with the packet.
Candidates for supervisor and the school board need 50 signatures. Candidates for all other offices need 125.
Virginia residency for at least one year is the only requirement to run for any office except Commonwealth’s Attorney. Candidates for that office must be licensed attorneys. There is no fee to become a candidate.
