From the bird feeder, the Red-bellied Woodpecker selects a sunflower seed and flies with it to the great maple in the side yard. There he wedges the seed in a crevice in the bark and whacks at it until he reaches the sweet kernel inside. Then the whole process is repeated. These woodpeckers also visit the suet and feast on Lee Trott’s famous “bird pudding.”
At my feeding tray, the female is much more aggressive than the male. At her approach, all birds — Juncos, White-throated Sparrows^ chickadees and titmice 4~ scatter like autumn leaves in a gust of wind. The male’s arrival does not result in such a quick evacuation by other birds.
