School superintendent Dr. David Gangel spoke to the board about the proposed school budget for 1999/2000.
He commented that the school board was attempting to improve schools while preventing substantial increases in costs.
Gangel asked for approval of the school budget, which was $7,841,232, and bottom line authority to make amendments as needed.
Board members had issues with certain items.
Among them were per-student costs, which have risen over to $7000, and administrative salaries. Board chairman “Pete” Estes pointed out to the public that the supervisors have nothing to do with setting salaries for anyone within the school system.
Board member Roger Welch noted that he has received comments from people who feel that the county has a” runaway school budget.”
Likewise, Mike Massie pointed out that the school budget had increased by $1.6 million 1997.
