The West End softball season began Monday evening on the diamond behind Mountainside Market, with two pick-up teams battling until the final play. A light drizzle threatened to overwhelm the enthusiasts, but the weather held out.
Team I managed a two-out rally in the top of the second inning for a 7-0 lead. However, Team II surged back to take a 9-7 lead by the end of the fifth. Raymond Williams IV hit a booming home run to center field.
Team I trailed 11-9 going into the seventh. But they rallied to tie the game on a clutch two-out hit from John Whissel. With two outs and a man on first in the bottom of the inning, John Loretti smacked an opposite-field line drive over third base to score the runner, clinching the 12-11 win for Team II.
