The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) practices
safety in its work zones every day. However, each April, VDOT highlights this practice with Work Zone Safety Awareness Week, a time when VDOT tries to impress upon the driving public the dangers that are inherent in work zones, and what measures drivers can take to protect themselves and highway workers.
In fact, more drivers are injured in work zone accidents than highway workers are. Last year in Virginia, seven motorist were killed in work zone accidents, while three highway workers lost their lives.
This year’s observance of Work Zone Safety Awareness Week in April coincided with daylight saving time and the beginning of VDOT’s heavy construction season. There are several simple tips that everyone should follow to avoid accidents:
1. Be alert. The top two causes of work zone accidents are inattentive driving and speeding.
