shop on Gay Street

Below Talk of the Town on Gay Street in what used to be Peter Kramer’s storage closet, Ellen Manson has opened Yam & More.
In every nook and cranny, Manson has filled her shop with knitting supplies and “more”: Ashford Wheels and Looms, Longaberger baskets and even Watkin’s products, such as salves, flavorings, seasonings and dip mixes.
Manson recalls the beginnings of her shop. “Peter Kramer had an extra room downstairs. It was a storage room, dark and dingy and groddy. My husband and I spackled, painted, and put the bookshelves together.” And they have created a great shop.
Yam & More opened April 1 and people are finding out. No longer will Washingtonians have to travel 20 miles for a needle and thread. And all sorts of classes are now being scheduled for knitting, crocheting, and quilting which were previously unavailable in this area,
Manson is a psychiatric mental health nurse who has found peace from her hectic, stressful professional life by knitting. She now lives in Flint Hill with her firefighter husband, and runs her own mental health practice. The practice is very small and focuses on adolescents, children and families.
To supplement her income, Manson decided one day “to open a shop and make it a variety store with a little bit of a lot of things. I decided yarn and fabric wouldn’t make it. The Rowan yarns are from England. The patterns for knitting are for all age groups. The fabric is for quilting or for any kind of sewing. And I can order anything people want, can drop ship to people’s homes.”
And Manson is more than happy to help people with their knitting projects, “I can help them get their sweater together. People like to get help with things. If they start a project and forget how to do something, they’ll come in, and I’ll show them what they forgot.”
Manson has tons of catalogues which she orders from containing yams and notions, sewing supplies, quilting supplies, quilting fabric, crossstitch supplies, and floss or thread, “If they can find it, I can get it, said Manson.”
Manson has been knitting and crocheting since she was six years old, “I used to make all my own clothes. Now, in my spare time, I’ll make things.”
