• The RCHS Guidance Department is hoping to begin a “job showing” program in the near future with the assistance of professionals from within the community. Through this “pilot” program we are hoping to give students an opportunity to experience firsthand a particular profession and to find out as much about it as possible during a one day visit to a given site. If successful, this program will give each student as opportunity to sample a career before deciding that this is the career that they will choose for the rest of their lives. It will also give students an opportunity to ask questions about courses that will help them in a given profession, minimal education requirements, necessary physical attributes, etc.
• If you are a professional in the community who would be willing to have two high school students spend a day at work with you, asking questions and watching you do what you do, please contact Robin Campbell at 987-8575 or Jan Makela at 987-8259.
• Letters were 8ent to several professionals in the community earlier this spring requesting their participation in this program. Due to scheduling conflicts among other things, the response was minimal. In order for this to be a viable program, we need at least 10-15 volunteer professionals to participate in this one day program. Please consider being a part of this exciting and worthwhile educational opportunity.
• We are very pleased to announce that RCES parent Mrs. Sherry Harnill-Huff was recently inducted into the Cornell University Hall of Fame for Polo. She was instrumental in beginning the first Women’s Polo Team at Cornell in the early 70’s. Mrs. Hamill-Huff is a member of the RCPS Special Education Advisory Committee.
• Many thanks to RCES parent Mary Riggleson for the very generous donation of an upright piano to the students of RCES. The piano will be housed in Mrs. Patty Hottinger’s Preschool Class. Music enhances any environment and this gift will certainly help to achieve that end. We appreciate the efforts of RCES parents David Alther, Ron Makela and Jimmy Swindler who moved the piano from the Riggleson home to RCES.
• Students from the RCPS Bands participated in the First Annual Tri-County Band Concert at Liberty High School in Fauquier County on Saturday, May 8. Over 100 students in uniform from Clarke, Fauquier and Rappahannock counties participated in this incredible performance under the direction of guest conductor John Russell. Thanks to Mrs. Lynne Fournier, Band Teacher, for finding these wonderful opportunities for our students.
