Rappahannock County students in grades 6-12 participated in the Virginia Music Educators Association (VMEA) District 14 contest on April 17 in Winchester. A total of 37 students participated in solos and ensembles. According to Rappahannock County Music Teacher Lynne Fournier, this is only the second time that the county has sent students to the annual event.
Among students in grades six through eight, eight soloists received superior ratings: Lauren Powell, Brian Taylor, Mattie Nawrocki, Erin Opseth, Morgan Blubaugh, Kyle Robinson, Jonathan Bankston and Cadee Starr.
For ensembles. Superior ratings went to Taylor and Bankston (Snare duet), Opseth and Robin Oyster (Flute duet) and Nicole Hess, Kayla Hill and Ginger Dennis (Flute trio). Lindsey Neill-Dore and Lara Kreyling received an excellent rating for their clarinet duet. Oyster and Chris Ehrhart (Flute-Clarinet duet) and Katie Giles and Melanie Torrence (Flute duet) also received excellent ratings.
Blubaugh and Ethan Berry (Saxophone duet) and Robinson, Bruce Flinchum and Glen Swain (Trumpet trio) earned good ratings.
Among students in grades nine through 12, Jenni Starr, Samantha Breeden, Krystal Heflin, Wendy Gillis, Holly Long, Amanda Brown and Josh McArthur received superior ratings. Jason Simeon won an excellent rating on his solo. Starr performed two solos, on French Horn and Trumpet, as did Breeden, who performed Flute and Piccolo solos.
Ensembles also did very well. Long and Breeden (Flute duet), Lea Pyne and Tony » Payne (Flute duet), Breeden and Brown (Piccolo/Snare Drum duet), and Amber Welch and Sarah Langelle (Clarinet duet) won superior ratings.
