We may live in a consumer-driven economy, but we must still take stock of the riches we build for the life after this. It is not enough to store up treasures that enable us to live in physical comfort and security, while neglecting to build a legacy that will help us face the judgements to come. The old admonition "you can't take it with you" more than implies that there are intangibles that can be taken to a life beyond this. As Hugh Blair expressed, "How shocking must thy summons be, O Death, to him that is at ease in his possessions! Who, counting on long years of pleasure here, is quite unfurnished for the world to come."
Paying attention to what is important is a particular challenge for us as Americans. Driven by our need to succeed, to acquire creature comforts, how easily we can become ensnared by it all and forget what we really value!
