• Virginia State Trooper, Gary Settle, recently visited Mrs. Jennifer Deal’s kindergarten class to talk to the children about safety and the importance of being good citizens. Naturally, he was wearing his uniform which coincidentally tied in nicely with the study of the U. Each child received his or her Junior Trooper badge, a pencil and a key chain. Students also got to sit in the police car and to meet Trooper Settle’s “friend”!?) who rides in the back. Thanks to Trooper Settle for visiting RCES.
• Portrait artist and children’s book illustrator, Ned Bittinger, will visit RCES on Friday, May 14. During his visit he will present two slide presentations on how he illustrates a book, he will share illustrations from his next book and he will produce a drawing of one lucky RCES student whose name will be chosen at random. The child will receive the portrait as a gift after it has been displayed at RCES for a short while. The first slide program will begin at 8:45 a.m.
• Mrs. Cynthia Simpson reports that fourth grade students have been studying Virginia History and she has been very pleased with their progress. Quiz your fourth graders. You’re sure to be pleasantly surprised. Studying the history of our state helps children feel a sense of pride and to develop a sense of Virginia’s importance in the birth of our country.
• Congratulations and best wishes are extended to RCHS teacher, Ms. Cynthia Cumins who is engaged to be married in June and will be moving to Maryland. Her positive spirit and concern for her students will be greatly missed by the entire community, but we wish her well as she begins her new life.
• Mrs. Andra Logan’s RCHS Special Education Transition Class is on their cruise to the Caribbean this week. After a great deal of fundraising and immense paperwork, all students finally gathered the necessary funds and documents needed to leave on this great adventure. The education these students will receive from the total experience will be invaluable.
• Please remember the RCES PTO Open House at 6:30 p.m. just prior to the Spring Program at RCES on Thursday, May 20. We encourage all parents to come and become acquainted with ways that you might help to make your child’s school better.
