the sampling sites are revisited in the future, to assess population changes. Should the salamander populations appear to be declining here in the park as they are elsewhere, the animals may be giving us a strong warning.
Because of their permeable skin, they actually breathe through it, the sala1 manders are particularly sensitive to both air and water pollution, and also to the increased levels of ultraviolet radiation due to ozone depletion. Despite their relative isolation—we share life fairly far, from industrial and population centers—they, like the park’s flora, can still suffer the effects of acid rain and soil resulting from industrial air pollution far to the west.
Like the proverbial canary in the coal mine, the salaman-v der will warn us of impending trouble. Let us hope that we listen.
