The other two options outlined by White were a drip irrigation system or collection and conveyance for treatment to Sperryville’s wastewater treatment plant.
Cost estimates
The cost estimates from WW Associates for these two options were about $4.5 million and $4.8 million, respectively.
The drip irrigation option would release treated wastewater underground through a subsurface drip system. This option would require land for the treated water to be release onto.
The 51-acre Clopton property and the 62-acre Updike property on Harris Hallow Road in Washington were evaluated by WAV Associates. The Virginia Department of Health would require a 60,000 gallons per day (gpd) capacity for the drip irrigation system, with 100 percent of that capacity as a reserve.
According to WTiite, the soil analysis of the Clopton property revealed a 50,000 gpd capacity and the Updike property only a 40,000 gpd capacity, leaving a deficit of 30,000 gpd.
White said that “eventually the soil will wear out” and that the average life span of a drainfield was about 10 years.
